On 13th September, the Grand Primo of the Grand Lodge of England, Bro Mick Walker, ROH experienced what has been described as a "minor stroke". As described by Bro Mick: Hi Everyone.
Just to put the records straight.
Last Wednesday (13th) I bent down to pick up a carrier bag to load into the car and as I straightened up I felt something go at the front of my head. My eyesight seemed to be blurred.
I drove to Paignton and from there drove to Weston Super Mare, on Friday I drove to Woolacombe. Although my eyesight wasn't too bad it was getting progressively worse, so worse in fact that I couldn't drive home, a task that my wife Ann did for me.
On arrival at High Wycombe we went straight to Accident and Emergency at Wycombe Hospital and they thought I had a detached retina.
I attended the eye clinic at Stoke Mandeville hospital the following day where they confirmed that I had suffered a stroke which had affected the neural pathways to the brain which control the right hand side of the eyes leaving me with loss of peripheral vision to the right in both eyes.
As a result of this I have to Get my blood pressure down (which was sky high), lose weight and have to give up alcohol, and I can't drive.
How permanent the damage is I do not know, I have to have an MRI scan and they tell me that this will determine the amount of damage done and how permanent it is. I then have to see a neurologist and take it from there.
I will not be giving up doing my planned itinerary and intend to keep active, all my Doctor says is try to live in a less stressful world (he's gotta be joking).
Please rest assured that you can't get rid of me that easily and I will do all in my power to keep going, I am not an invalid, I just can't see as well as I used to.
Thanks for all your get well messages.
Kind regards. Mick Walker ROH Grand Primo
Bro Mick has been in contact with me to let me know that he is fine - he is not ill, but he has just lost a bit of his eyesight and it is a warning for him to take it a bit easier as he has been under a fair bit of pressure of recent times. We all would like to wish Bro Mick a speedy recovery and hope he suffers no long-term effects.
